TAD Remix Competition – The Winners

On the 25th September 2015 entries closed for our first ever remix competition.

The track up for remix was Verlies Projekt’s debut single ‘Feels Like Heaven’

We had some amazing entries in all kinds of styles ranging from 60’s RnB to so dark and weird I can’t even begin to guess the genre!

There were over 40 entries and the overall quality was astounding, so much so it was really hard to pick a winner so we opted for 3 (though even then it was criminal that at least another 6 just missed out)

We wanted to get to know our winners a little better so we sent them a few questions about the way they worked and what’s next for them.

3rd PLACE – CURIO

Curio blew us away with his epic futuristic dubsmash version. The attention to detail in the arrangement was obviously a lot of work and the vocoded vocal and alternative melodies were a really nice touch that took the track in a completely new direction.

Who are your favourite producers and artists, that inspire you as a producer?

My inspiration comes from EDM producers such as Fractal, Grabbitz, Pendulum, Au5 and Savant. I particularly like working with a strong contrast of high and low points in a track, like when a track goes from cinematic ambience to full-on intense bass. I love trying to push boundaries with whatever I do, and I surround myself with inspiration from those who do it brilliantly.

How long did you spend putting together your remix?

I spent two and a half weeks putting the remix together, juggling studio time with full time restauranteur work. As a 19 year old I can also utilise time up until around 2am without any real negative effects, which comes in very handy.

If you could DJ/ perform at any one venue where in the world would it be? And who else would be on the bill?

As much as I love making rowdy bass bangers, my favourite genre to perform live is chillout music… That’s why my dream gig would be at Cafe’ Del Mar on the island of Ibiza… playing as the sun sets. joining me for this set would be Fractal, Direct and Lux… My three favourite ambient/chillout producers.

Will you be entering the next remix competition?

I likely will enter the next competition, I think I’d be a fool not to after my bronze medal here 🙂

What other releases have you got coming up in the near future?

I am gathering ideas for an E.P. No target date for release in mind yet but I’m working on that.

2nd PLACE – OREOL MUSIC

Oreol Music came in literally at the last minute to throw the competition wide-open. There were quite a few entries that were battling it out for the top 5 spot and then this absolute banger threw a cat among the pigeons, with a couple of the judges instantly putting it in the top 3. With a final drop like that it’s not hard to see why.

Who are your favourite producers and artists that inspire what you do as a producer?

My favourite producers are William Orbit (Madonna), Liam Howlett (The Prodigy), Rick Rubin (Slayer, S.O.A.D, Linkin Park), Dj Lethal (Limp Bizkit) and many others with that saturated sound. I love music with vocals as I am a singer myself. I think you can get more feedback and reaction to a track with words as it is more emotive than just an instrumental.

What were your first thoughts when you heard the original track?

My thought was to make an absolutely new mix with the original vocals, so I tried not to listen to the song before the remix was almost finished. Then I actually found the song pretty positive in comparison. It is simple to listen to and I liked it.

What DAW and what hardware/ software plug-ins did you use to create the track?

I’m using Cubase and FL Studio to create main ideas for tracks and to record vocals as well.
My favourite VST – Native Instruments. There are huge possibilities to work on sounds and melodies using their products.

Will you be entering the next remix competition?

If I like the vocal part – absolutely yes, I will. If I don’t I can also try to sing on my own! 🙂

What other releases have you got coming up in the near future?

I’m taking part in several remix opportunities on different labels for now and I think it’s a good start for making music in professional way.  I’ve always been an EDM singer (Steklo Vocal) and now I’m having a chance to show myself as a music producer. Follow my fb / sc page to watch the news!

WINNER! – AMBIENTRONIC

Ambientronic are a duo that work remotely from Russia and Australia! (Roman and Dean respectively..) Their mix was a big favourite among all the judges, it was a fairly early entry but even then we knew it was going to be hard to top. The wonky analog sounds like the bent synth line on the chorus gave a really uneasy undercurrent to the almost saccharine top parts, a combination which worked perfectly to make this version stand out. It maintains a fairly conservative pop arrangement but uses subtle sounds to gradually build into something rather epic. We felt it really captured the essence of the track and the execution was spot on.

Who are your favourite producers and artist that inspire what you do as producers?

Dean: Severed Heads in the main… Depeche Mode, New Order. Gus Gus.

Roman: Various audible electronic music of my age with the decent production quality. I also love Bach. Oh and J Dilla/Nujabes influenced hiphop.

How long did you spend putting together your remix?

Dean: Basic idea came very quickly… a couple of hours. 2 days to finish it.

What were your first thoughts when you heard the original track?

Dean: I’m a huge fan of ‘that’ style of track from the 80’s. Strong melody, emotion & great arrangement. The key was to remix it while preserving those elements that make the track work.

If you could DJ/ perform at any one venue where in the world would it be? And who else would be on the bill?

Dean: At ADE 🙂 and with Severed Heads & Boards Of Canada on the bill.

What DAW and what hardware/ software plug-ins did you use to create the track?

Roman: We use mostly Urs Heckman’s software. Hardware is the lovely SE1X. DAW is Live 9.

Will you be entering the next remix competition?

Dean: Absolutely. Can’t wait.

What other releases have you got coming up in the near future?

Dean: We just released our 2nd album, Duo. Another remix we did recently was also just released… Gotta Be You (Ambientronic Remix) by Piero.
